It’s Time for an Exciting New FMPS Grant at Village School!
It’s time for an exciting new FMPS grant at Village School! In the coming months, Village will be beautified by an amazing mosaic mural designed by Village fourth graders under the direction of world-renowned renowned artist David Fichter.
“We saw David’s artwork while we were visiting a school in Lawrence, and we immediately knew that we wanted the children in Marblehead to have the opportunity to work with him,” said fourth grade teachers Mary LeBlanc and Annie Pugh, and art teacher Randy Guthartz. They gathered information and applied for a grant, which was approved by FMPS last spring.
At the project kick-off assembly last week, Fichter explained the process to the fourth grade: students will create drawings inspired by the mural’s theme–the land and water of our community–and Fichter will combine parts of the drawings to create a mural design. Installation for the 6 x 14-foot mural is planned for mid-November. The project links, math, science, social studies, and art, the teachers explain, and will integrate scientific inquiry and engineering.
The Village artists are ready to start creating. “Getting to do this project and having it for a long time is really cool,” said one fourth grader. “When I’m older it will be great to see what the kids then will think about it,” added another.
